    Christmassy Taipei

The final leg of our trip was spending 2011’s Christmas in Taipei. It’s my first visit to Taiwan’s capital and I only get 1.5 days here…did not even get to visit the famous night market scenes (my subsequent trips made up for this, yeah!). But at least the quality time spent with our relatives there was priceless. We were reminded of the holiday period by the super heavy traffic leading to Taipei and it took us a while before reaching our hotel. Thereafter, first stop being the largest garment wholesale area of Wu Fen Pu (五分埔).

    Wu Fen Pu in Taipei

This place is so big that it has a thousand over shops lining along its alleys inside the shopping district. Here’s where you will find good quality trendy local brand clothing at a very reasonable price. Since this is, after all, a wholesale market, do not expect the same kind of cosy layout or service standards found in shopping malls.

Single purchases of items are welcome though not necessary wholeheartedly by shopkeepers. Just apply the mantra of “fast, cheap and good: pick two” when shopping here. We were told that some shops in Ximending (西门町) procured their stocks from Wu Fen Pu too. Hence, better check out this place before anywhere else when shopping for clothing in Taipei.

And perhaps not coming here during the holiday period too, else it will be packed like what we experienced. The alleys and shops were so crowded that we can barely move sometimes.

I gave up after a while, moving among the crowd is just so tiring and left the shopping tasks to wifey. Found a park with playground inside the district and waited there.

And saw some folks feeding the squirrels hanging on the trees in an interesting way.

    Taipei 101

Perhaps the visit to Taiwan’s ultimate landmark – Taipei 101 kinda made up for not visiting the night markets – not agreeable by my tummy, of course, LOL. The iconic skyscraper does have a unique design – almost looks like an eight-segment Chinese Pagoda to me.

But I think what’s more impressive is having such a tall structure in a land where there are occurrences of typhoon and earthquake. Indeed an engineering marvel to ensure its safety against the force of nature.

The Christmas decorations around Taipei 101 heightened our festive mood.

The crowd that day ensured a long wait before it’s our turn to board the lift to the observation deck. Also kinda disappointed that the outdoor deck was closed to the public that day in preparation for New Year’s Day fireworks.

Here’s the 730-ton damper which counteracts against swaying, there’s information on how the damper actually works too. I walked out the building totally impressed.

    Liberty Square

We did a quick visit to Liberty Square next morning before heading to the airport in the afternoon. Yup, not enough time again but I am so coming back to Taiwan soon! I totally enjoyed my time in Taiwan and will not hesitate to recommend anyone to visit or revisit again.

    STAY: Yo Xing Hotel review

The one night stay at Yo Xing Hotel (友星大飯店) was not bad. Its location is definitely the major highlight as it’s close to Guting MRT Station and walking distance to Liberty Square. I can’t say the same thing about its dated room and furniture, though. But since we’re only here for one night, I supposed it’s passable.

  • The Port City of Kaohsiung

    The Port City of Kaohsiung

We were kinda reluctant to leave Kenting for Kaohsiung the next day. The feeling is like leaving Mother Nature and heading back to the concrete jungle. Then again, we only have one day in Taiwan’s second largest city, which is sadly not enough time for me to wander around. I would love to return to southern Taiwan again in future for some extended wandering.

Our first stop in Kaohsiung was E-Da Outlet Mall which carries many famous international brands. Time for retail therapy and wow… the mall is huge! The whole place is so expansive that I got tired just by walking around. Is it worth it then? Not sure about the street prices but it’s definitely not as cheap compared to the outlet malls in Europe or US…

Eventually gave up and decided to look for food instead LOL. I came across this funny bakery that makes a crazily huge loaf of bread. Gosh, look at the size!! How can someone finish eating that?

It was already quite late when the rest are done with their only major shopping throughout the trip. So we left promptly to the hotel after our very late lunch. We heard people screaming while walking to the carpark and it was from those who were on this ride at the theme park…woohoo!!

Sizihwan sunset and dinner at Cijin Island

After check-in, we proceed to Sizihwan (西子灣), a popular sunset-viewing place in Kaohsiung. The best way to view the sunset is by climbing up the steps leading up to the building of Former British Consulate (打狗英国领事馆). However, let me warn you in advance that this place is seriously packed during sunset hours and have to squeeze your way through.

But the effort is truly worth it as the sunset here is truly beautiful…if only I had captured better shots, oh well.

Dinner’s next and we proceed to the nearby Gushan ferry terminal (鼓山渡轮站) to board the next ferry bound for Cijin Island (旗津岛). The longish island is less than 10-minute ride away and known for their seafood. A short walk from the pier brought us to the seafood street where we were spoiled for choices for dinner.

We finally settled for this restaurant and had a delicious seafood dinner here at Cijin Island.

    Night stroll along Love River

Before heading back to the hotel, I took a stroll along Love River (爱河). Love River splits the city area into two distinct sections and has atmospheric lights that illuminate the path along the river. It isn’t exactly the most exciting spot to visit but it does offer nice views of Kaohsiung skyline and a nice place for lazy night stroll especially for couples.

I decided to turn back to the hotel because the strong winter wind became unbearable and saw this interesting building nearby.

    STAY: Fullon Hotel Kaohsiung review

The short stay at Fullon Hotel Kaohsiung (高雄福容大飯店) was very comfortable and our room came with a nice view of Love River. Clean large room, comfy bed plus a well-equipped bathroom. It’s easy to walk over to the Love River for a late night stroll like what I did and enjoyed. Can’t comment on the amenities though as I didn’t explore the surrounding of the hotel.

Maybe I will, during my next trip here?
